Archery has been included among the core sports of the Olympic Games.
The Executive Board of IOC, in the meeting held in Losanna on 12th February, agreed on the 25 sports it will proposeto the 125thIOC Session for approval as the core sports for the 2020 Olympic Games.
The 25 sports are: archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football,gymnastic, handball, hockey, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, taekwondo, table tennis, tennis, shooting, swimming, triathlon, sailing, volleyball and weightlifting.
“An important decision was taken by the IOC Executive Board concerning the Olympic Programme, and 25 core sports were fixed for the 2020 Olympic Games”, declared the President of the World Archery, Prof. Dr Ugur Erdener. “Our great sport archery is now one of the important Olympic Sports. However, the elimination of some sports, demonstrates to us that it is important to sustain working hard in the future and to continue to strive to make our sport an important one at national level worldwide”.
The wrestling, one of the oldest sports, was not included in the list of the core sports for 2020.
